A jet drive was used because of its advantages over propeller propulsion. The advantages of the jet drive is that direction of propulsion can be directed 360 degrees, the shaft only has to turn in 1 direction because reverse is achieved by lowering a shield over the jet which redirects it. The up/down thrust from the jet is mechanically connected to the hydroplanes at the front of the submarine via a Joystick. Which enables it to achieve greater manoeuvrability.
